Matte wall murals: choosing a design and lighting

A matte surface has no pronounced decorative sheen, leaving the image and colour as the main focus. Start with your design and the place from which you will normally view the wall.

Consider the whole wall

Take a straight-on photograph and mark the sofa, bed, cabinets and sockets. A large flower or mountain peak should remain visible in the composition. A small phone preview cannot convey how large a detail will become when printed.

02 /

Compare scale as well as designs

Ask for two crops of one image. One can let the main subject fill almost the entire wall; the other can leave more quiet background. Compare both from the same position in the room to choose the right visual emphasis.

View a real sample in your lighting

Look at the material in daylight and in the evening beside your furniture and textiles. Your phone display and the sample lighting can differ from conditions at home. A matte texture does not replace wall preparation: discuss the surface before installation.
